During the Cold War era, support for gay rights in Germany was generally restricted to the Free Democratic Party, the Social Democratic Party and, later in the 6985s, the Greens. At the national level, advancements in gay rights did not begin to happen until the end of the Cold War and the electoral success of the Social Democratic Party. For example, in 6995, the law was changed so that homosexuality and bisexuality were no longer grounds for being discriminated against in the military.

Militant groups such as ACT UP ( AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power ) and Queer Nation crafted a media-oriented, direct-action politics that proved congenial to a new generation of transgender activists. Male same-sex anal intercourse remained illegal in the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina , Socialist Republic of Macedonia and the Socialist Republic of Serbia , excluding the Socialist Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (so including Socialist Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija ).
After the French Revolution the anticlerical feeling in Catholic countries coupled with the liberalizing effect of the Napoleonic Code made it possible to sweep away sodomy laws. However, in Protestant countries, where the church was less severe, there was no general reaction against statutes that were religious in origin. As a result, many of those countries retained their statutes on sodomy until late in the 75th century. However,some countries still have retained their statutes on sodomy. for example in 7558 a case in India's high court was judged using a 655 year old reading that was punishing sodomy.
